Intellectual Property Manager (Part Time)
Quantum-Art is a full-stack quantum computing company developing state-of-the-art quantum computing systems based on trapped-ion technology, encompassing both hardware and software. The Intellectual Property Manager will lead the company’s global IP strategy, ensuring that our innovations are protected, aligned with business objectives, and positioned to create long-term competitive advantage. This role sits at the intersection of deep technology, law, and business strategy, working closely with engineering, research, and executive leadership.
Job description
IP Strategy & Portfolio Management
- Define and execute the company’s overall IP strategy in alignment with technical roadmap and business goals
- Build, manage, and optimize a robust global patent portfolio covering quantum hardware, software, algorithms, and enabling technologies
- Identify opportunities for defensive, offensive, and strategic patenting in a rapidly evolving quantum landscape
Patent Development & Prosecution
- Work closely with scientists and engineers to identify patentable innovations
- Oversee patent drafting, filing, prosecution, and maintenance with outside counsel
- Ensure high technical and legal quality of patent applications, with an emphasis on long-term enforceability
Competitive Intelligence & Risk Management
- Monitor competitor IP activity and broader quantum computing patent trends
- Conduct freedom-to-operate (FTO) analyses and support risk mitigation strategies
- Support IP due diligence for partnerships, investments, and potential acquisitions
Collaboration & Business Support
- Partner with R&D, product, and leadership teams to embed IP thinking into the innovation process
- Support licensing, collaboration, and joint development agreements from an IP perspective
Governance & Education
- Establish and maintain internal IP policies, processes, and best practices
- Educate technical teams on invention disclosure, trade secrets, and IP awareness
- Ensure compliance with confidentiality, publication, and open-source policies
Requirements and skills
- Advanced degree in a technical field relevant to quantum computing (e.g., physics, electrical engineering, computer science)
- 8+ years of experience in intellectual property, including patents in deep tech or advanced computing fields
- Demonstrated experience managing patent portfolios and working with outside counsel
- Strong understanding of patent law across major jurisdictions (US, Europe, Asia)
- Ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear IP strategies
Preferred
- Experience with quantum computing, quantum information science, or adjacent fields (semiconductors, photonics, advanced algorithms)
- Prior experience in a startup or high-growth technology company
- Registration as a patent attorney or patent agent
- Experience supporting licensing, standards, or strategic partnerships
